Clinical Benefits

Prevention and treatment of oral mucositis

Relief of peripheral neuropathic pain

Reduction of xerostomia and mucosal inflammation

Improved post-surgical healing and tissue regeneration

Support for physical and emotional well-being

“For patients undergoing cancer treatment, photobiomodulation has made a remarkable difference. It effectively reduces the severity of oral mucositis, allowing patients to eat, speak, and continue treatment with much less discomfort.”

Dr. Joel Epstein, DMD, MSD

Before & afters

Curative treatment following chemotherapy sessions

Treatment of a Grade III epitheliitis after 5 weeks of radiotherapy, progress after 4 sessions over 2 weeks.

ATP38 Photobiomodulation - BioLights Dynamics - before x after Oncology

Preventive treatment following chemotherapy sessions

Treatment of epitheliitis with a session of PBM prior to the chemotherapy session.

7 STUDIES

1. PBM to Prevent Oral Side Effects in Head & Neck Cancer. A randomized, single-blind RCT with 53 patients found PBM significantly delayed and reduced oral mucositis, preserved salivary function, and decreased pain and dysgeusia.

2. From molecular mechanisms to clinical applications: A comprehensive review of photobiomodulation in cancer treatment. Read more

3. Cost-effectiveness of photobiomodulation therapy for the prevention and management of cancer treatment toxicities: A systematic review. Read more

4. A Pilot Study Comparing Intraoral and Transcutaneous Photobiomodulation for Oral Mucositis in Head and Neck Cancer Patients. Read more

5. WALT Position Paper (2022 Consensus). Endorses PBM for preventing/treating mucositis, dermatitis, dysphagia, xerostomia, lymphedema, and neuropathy, with evidence-based dosimetry guidelines.

6. Chemotherapy-Induced Oral Mucositis: A 2020 meta-analysis. Found PBM significantly reduces mucositis severity, duration, and pain, but highlights the need for standardized parameters.

7. Peripheral Neuropathy & Lymphedema – NEUROLASER Pilot RCT. In breast cancer patients, PBM reduced neuropathy symptoms, improved physical function, and quality of life.

PBM & Safety

3 STUDIES

1. In vitro/Animal Tumor-Stimulation Concerns. Most studies show PBM does not enhance tumor growth; high doses rarely showed growth stimulation.

2. Safety & Tumor Risk – Systematic Review (67 studies, April 2020). Concluded PBM is safe and may improve survival when used correctly.

3. Safety and efficacy of photobiomodulation therapy in oncology: A systematic review. Read more
